That’s right! Buy a Product. Plant a tree.

We’ve stocked our shelves with our favorites for the season! If you’re in the area and looking for gifts – be sure to stop in and see what we have. Not only will you be gifting a high quality product to the ones you love, you’ll also be doing good for the environment.

Why Choose Body Therapy Massage & Spa?

We know we’re not the only massage, facial, and body waxing game in town. There are many spas and local spots where you can receive the relaxing and therapeutic benefits of our services. So what makes us different? Why come to Body Therapy Massage & Spa?We believe our difference is upheld in our Core Values:

1.    J.U.I.C.E – Join Us In Creating Energy We know that we are energetic beings. Every person impacts the energy of the room in a positive way – some people impact it positively when they walk in, and some when they walk out. Our team is committed to creating a space where you feel our positive energy when you walk into our space. We love to laugh, we love to joke, and we love to treat our clients with a smile! We believe in co-creating a Culture of Care for each other and everyone we engage with.  If you walk in after having a bad day, we aim for you to walk out feeling the opposite.

2.    Consistency is the Key to Excellence. That is, consistency without same-ness. We aim for consistent excellence but team members bring their own flair and definition to what excellence means. We know that our services are a balance between art and science. All of our massage therapists and estheticians are licensed. But they are each, also, artists. Monet and Picasso had very different styles and are both considered among the greatest in their style of art. We view our team in such the same way. If you don’t like someone’s style we encourage you to try someone else on the team. It will be a different style, but they will be excellent at it!

3.    An Environment that supports Education continuously motivates Excellence. Our team continues to invest in educating themselves in their field of expertise. Moreover, as a team, we strive to learn together. All of that education means nothing if we don’t share it with YOU.We strive to educate our clients about our services. This starts with every session including a pre-brief. New clients should anticipate a longer discussion as your therapist or esthetician gets to know you, your history, and your goals for why you came here. We ALSO include debriefs following our sessions.  The purpose of debriefing is to allow the professional to educate you on what they found during their session, at home after-care necessary to continue working towards your goals, and a recommended return timeframe. We know when we blend J.U.I.C.E, Consistency and Education, you’ll notice the difference at Body Therapy Massage & Spa, and why we’re more than a place that provides bodywork services.

We’re going to be out and about!

We are going to be out and about at many events this coming month. Take a look at what’s going on – come say hello! We’ll have drawings, chair massage and more waiting for you!

Have you carved out time for yourself recently?

You’ve probably spent the season carving faces into pumpkins. Now you’re getting ready for carving the Turkey. Have you taken the time to carve out time in your schedule for yourself for a massage?

Whether you’ve had a massage before, surely you had some preconceived ideas of what the massage was for. Maybe you came in as a treat for yourself, or to reap the benefits of relaxation. Maybe you slept on your neck wrong and needed some relief from a tense or cramped muscle. Maybe you’re an athlete who needed to give your hard-worked muscles a break.

Whatever the reason for your curiosity, there are a number of reasons regular (meaning monthly appointments or more frequently) massage is becoming more of a mainstream treatment option, not just a luxury you treat yourself to once in a while. Here are a few of the top benefits of massage:

It is relaxing. We live in an ever-connected world where every buzz, beep and ding could lead to another grain of sand on the beaches of stress. As stress increases, the body responds in a multitude of unhealthy ways including:
Tense muscles
Increased levels of cortisol
Sleeplessness
Digestive Issues
Headaches
Weight Gain

Regular massage – and the regular opportunity to unplug and unwind – allows the body to enter recovery mode.

It reduces stress. Not only is regular massage a break from a stressful life, but regular monthly massages help keep stress reduced between sessions the longer it remains a part of your regular self-care routine.  The prolonged massage sessions can boost energy, reduce pain, and also promote emotional healing.

Massage was once considered a fringe, luxury purchase when you wanted to treat yourself or to celebrate a special occasion. Now it is considered a mainstream treatment option for numerous conditions. We believe in helping our clients treat themselves and promote their overall health.

What are the different types of facials?

One of our most frequently asked questions is “what is the difference between the facials you offer?”

First – let’s address what is the same about all of them:·     All of our facials are performed by a licensed esthetician.·     All of our facials are customizable – meaning the esthetician will pick products that pair best with your skin type and the goals you want to achieve.·     All of our facials use Eminence products. The company is based out of Hungary, and offers 100% natural and organic products. That’s Certified Organic by European standards, which are much higher standards than the U.S. currently holds.

Our base or standard facial is our Custom Facial. The Custom Facial is 60 minutes long and includes:
Double Cleanse
Deep Exfoliation Process w/ Steam
Extractions
Masque
Neck & Shoulder Massage
A Serum that meets the needs of your skin
Deep Hydration treatment
Lip & Eye Treatment

Sometimes, you just need a quick clean. Something that gets you in-and-out quickly, but still leaves you feeling refreshed and your skin rejuvenated. Something that allows you to break away from the craziness of a stressful life. This is where our Express Facial fits in. Our Express Facial is 30 minutes long, and includes a cleansing and exfoliation process with a masque and hydration treatment. This quick deep clean does not include the extraction process, which is the process by which the esthetician removes black and white heads from the pores on your face.

While sometimes a quick clean is necessary, other times a deep relaxation is necessary. If that’s the case for you – the European Facial is your choice. The European Facial is 90 minutes in length, and includes everything in the Custom Facial. It ALSO includes a foot and calf massage, a scalp massage, and your choice of either an eyebrow wax OR a custom foot scrub to exfoliate your feet.

Another one of our most frequently asked questions – should men get facials? We like to answer that question with a question: Do men have skin? If so – then absolutely! Men can also benefit from the rejuvenating benefits of facials. We even have products suitable for men with facial hair that will help the skin underneath and in turn, help the hair grow healthier.

What are the Benefits of a Facial?

When looking at the array of options of things to do at the spa to treat yourself, you’ve likely looked at facials as an option. However, professional facials are more than just a treat for you every once in a while. It’s important to understand the importance of regular facials to your overall health and well-being.

Benefits for your skin
Professional facial treatments can be likened to seeing your dentist. It is important to brush your teeth twice per day between visits to keep bacteria and other issues at bay. Similarly, you should be washing your face at home twice per day. Just like your dentist does much more for the overall health of your teeth, so do regular visits to your licensed esthetician. The good news – going in for facials is far more enjoyable than sitting in your dentist’s chair!

The first major benefit you’ll see is cleansed skin. Not cleansed like you just washed your face in the shower, but deeply cleansed. Your esthetician is going to use special products and steam to really open your pores. From there, they will be able to extract blackheads and whiteheads. If you have acne, they will use special products to fight and clear the bacteria living on your skin that causes the condition. Also, because they skin is cleansed and pores are free and clear, the skin will better be able to absorb products like masques, serums and moisturizers.

The additional cleansing and exfoliation will promote skin cell turnover, which is a key factor in aging prevention. Furthermore, dead skin cells cannot absorb moisture – only living cells can. By ensuring the top layer of dead skin has been thoroughly removed, your skin will look and feel softer and have a glowing appearance to it. Your skin will look and feel rejuvenated for days following your treatment!

Your skin is the first line of defense against the external environment. Your face is special because it is one of the few areas that is consistently exposed to these elements. Most areas of your skin – such as our arms, legs, and torso – are covered in part or entirely by clothing that acts as an additional barrier. If you take a moment and think about what is invisible to the naked eye in the air – dirt, dust, air pollution (like exhaust from cars) – ALL of that is being filtered out by your skin to prevent it from getting into your bloodstream and internal organ systems. A facial provides a deep clean to detoxify the skin from these nasty elements in our environment that your normal cleansing routine may not be getting to.
Regular facials also promote even skin tone. From acne marks, to aging spots, to redness of the skin – your esthetician has a customized treatment that is ready to help you achieve your best skin!

Let’s take a moment and talk about one very important area on your face – your eyes. The window to your soul. The skin around your eyes is very different than the rest of your face. This is why you likely started seeing crow’s feet in the corner of your eyes before seeing any other signs of aging. The skin around your eyes typically has the most motion when showing expression. It is also the thinnest area of skin on your entire body – meaning all that motion shows more wear and tear than any other area. A professional facial will also include products that will help prevent the signs of aging and help rejuvenate the area around your eyes.

Benefits for your well-being
Unlike sitting in your dentist’s chair, which is likely to induce some stress – sitting in your esthetician’s chair might be likened to taking a stay-cation. Regular professional facials are a regular break from the hustle and bustle of life and activity. It is a chance to lie back (literally), and let someone else care for you for a bit. Regular self-care and relaxation practices – like monthly facials – have also been linked to reduction of anxiety and other psychological distress.  Furthermore, there are hundreds of pressure points located on your face that connect to various systems in your body. During a facial massage (included in professional treatments) these pressure points are activated, and your body responds.

The combination of facial massage and the professional products used during your treatment will also result in increased blood circulation. Increased blood circulation yields more oxygen and nutrients getting to the cells, which translates to a healthier you.

Getting regular professional facials is more than a treat – it is one of the ways to promote a healthier YOU.

If you have any further questions about how a professional facial could benefit you, we encourage you to book an appointment and consult with one of our licensed estheticians who would be more than happy educate you further!

Have you ever heard of Shiatsu Massage?

Shiatsu is a style of massage that originated in Japan, and is based on traditional Chinese medicine. This style of massage relies on the use of fingers, thumbs, and palms to apply pressure to the body to promote energy flow (called “chi”) and release blockages of energy. This modality works to improve overall health of the entire internal energy system. When one area is ‘blocked’ it prevents that energy stream from entering another area, leaving it ‘empty’. Blocked chi can contribute to a variety of aches, pains and illnesses. The goal of Shiatsu is to bring balance to the energy streams within your body. This promotes healthy circulation, reduces stress, soothes pain, and can calm the sympathetic nervous system.

Shiatsu and Acupuncture have a similar foundational understanding. Both forms of Eastern Medicine rely on “energy highways” in the body referred to as meridians. These energy highways are responsible for carrying different forms of energy throughout the body. When we say your meridian is “blocked” – it’s like the energy in your body is stuck on I-75 at 6pm on a Tuesday during construction season – it’s moving, but not at the rate or pace you’d prefer on a highway. While Acupuncture uses needles to move, or release the energy blockages, Shiatsu uses massage pressure – also called Acupressure – to release the energy.

One of the core differences that most people notice first is that this style of massage is performed clothed, on a padded mat on the floor. When attending a Shiatsu session, it is recommended that you dress like you would to attend a class at your local gym. Loose fitting, stretchy clothing is ideal.

Our Owner, Jerry Stutz, is our Shiatsu Practitioner. He has been studying the craft for almost a decade and has mastered the blend of art and science in the practice. Sessions are typically an hour and a half to ensure full energy work is accomplished. If you see Jerry, feel free to ask him about his experience with Shiatsu, and why he believes so strongly in its healing capabilities.

No Judgements Here!

When working in close proximity with another individual, sometimes you might wonder if things can get a little too personal. Here are a few situations that are very natural that your technician won’t think twice about during your session.

1.    Gas. Everybody passes gas. It’s a fact of life. It’s also a natural body function for releasing gases produced during the digestion process. Some foods simply create more gas than others. When you are relaxed, your digestive function is influenced – it relaxes as your body relaxes. This is beneficial for your digestive system, as it moves more fluidly! However, this means that it is more likely gas will be released. This is the same reason many people feel the need to use the restroom right after their massage.  If you pass a little gas, don’t worry, your technician won’t judge. In fact, trying to clench and keep it in might undo the relaxation you’re trying to accomplish.

2.    Weight. Most people feel self-conscious about some part of their body. We unfortunately live in a society that plays on that self-consciousness – with stick thin ladies and 12-pack abs gentlemen in nearly every advertisement, followed by another diet or pill plan that can help you achieve that aim – it’s easy for us to judge ourselves about our bodies, and assume a new stranger might as well.Fortunately, your therapist and esthetician is far more interested in you taking care of yourself than what your body looks like. They are more interested in working with you on achieving your goals for taking care of yourself in the best way they can. You’re never too big, or too small, to let your size be what keeps you from taking care of YOU.

3.    Being Touched. Sometimes it’s not a weight issue that causes self-consciousness. Sometimes, we just don’t want certain areas to be touched. This is more common in massage, where areas like the glutes, belly, thighs or feet may be worked on.Your therapist is far more concerned with how the tissues in an area are functioning than in the way they look. A therapist is judging the structure of your body – the muscles, connective tissues, etc. – and how they can help you improve its movement. And if you’re still uncomfortable being touched in a certain area – PLEASE DO NOT be embarrassed sharing that with your therapist.  It is their role to help you relax, not leave you feeling uncomfortable.

4.    Taking off your Clothes. Your massage therapist or esthetician will likely advise you to undress to your comfort level. For some – this means removing all of their clothing. For others – this means removing very little. If that is your preference – RIGHT ON! You should never feel pressured to take more clothing off than you feel comfortable with. Your massage therapist can work over clothing, and your esthetician can avoid skin areas that remain covered by clothing. However, in a massage session, it is important to know that the massage while clothed has very different results than massage without fabric covering the skin where oil cannot be used. Most clients find themselves in a happy medium with leaving their underwear on. Regardless of your preference, you remain modestly draped under a sheet and blanket for the duration of your service. Only the area the therapist is working on is exposed, and is placed back under the blankets once that area is complete.

5.    Your Health History. While Body Therapy Massage & Spa is not a medical facility, your technician will ask you questions about your health history, and your prescriptions. We recognize the trust you are placing in us, and hold your privacy as our highest priority. Your information is never shared or divulged. Your technician will need to know what is going on, as certain medications and health conditions impact the products we use (especially during facials), or how your body will respond (especially during massages). If you are unsure as to why your therapist or esthetician needs to know certain information, please feel free to ask them during the pre-brief. They will be happy to share.

6.    Your Income. We will never ask you for income specific details – but we also recognize not everyone can afford regular massage and facials. One of the most frequently asked questions we receive from clients is how often they should be coming in. The answer can be as often as every week, but for most individuals a monthly massage and facial is enough for maintenance. Don’t be embarrassed if you can’t have the whole enchilada every month. Our Platinum Membership Plan is designed to reward our clients who come in for our services on a regular basis, and leaves them an opportunity to spoil themselves with a little something extra when their budget allows.

7.    You Didn’t Shave. Your technician won’t judge you for your body hair. Again, your therapist and esthetician are most concerned about you helping to take care of YOU. Whether it’s your legs, arms, armpits or other areas that you are self-conscious of for not shaving – there’s no need to worry.

8.    Ladies: You are on your cycle. Your menstrual cycle is a very normal bodily function. There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. If you are experiencing any symptoms related to your period (acne, cramping, bloating, constipation, etc.) – please let your technician know during the pre-brief. Chances are, they have a solution they can offer to help. This can include special products for hormonal skin during a facial, or stretches that your therapist can show you that may help with cramps. Your technicians are on your self-care team – feel free to ask for their expertise to help you!

Have a Healthy Heart!

This coming Sunday (September 29th) is World Heart Day! Are you taking care of your Heart Health?

You might be aware of some of the benefits of massage as it relates to stress and muscle tension relief. But did you know that regular massage sessions also benefit your heart?

Regular massage therapy sessions can help lower blood pressure. Some studies have even shown that consistent massage can reduce both the systolic (upper number) and diastolic (lower number) pressures. Lowering stress and blood pressure in turn can reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and/or kidney failure, along with numerous other health conditions hypertension impacts.

Furthermore, regular massage can help improve circulation. The long-term benefits of massage cannot be overlooked as many of the benefits accumulate over time like a snowball effect. Proper circulation brings a blood supply to tense, stiff or damaged muscles to promote healing. Circulation increases because massage uses hands-on pressure which helps move the blood through the body. It also helps blood move through damaged and congested areas of the body, and causes new blood to flow into tissues. This helps the oxygenation of tissues, and for waste in the tissue to be moved away. In turn, this increased circulation plays a role in lowering blood pressure, and improves overall body function.

Regular massage care is more than just relaxing and treating yourself to a spa day. It is an effective addition to your regular overall health routine. Taking care of yourself is the most important work you’ll ever do. Have you set aside time in the coming week for self care?

What is a facial? And why do I need one?

You’ve probably seen the advertisements all over your local department stores – “spa-like facial in the comfort of your own bathroom!” What is the difference between a do-it-yourself facial at home, and a professional facial?

The base purpose of any skin care routine is to address your skin’s needs – whether that be anti-aging, reducing dark spots, clearing acne, reducing redness, or any combination of the above. In order to achieve those needs, a well-balanced home skin care routine is necessary.  Just like it is necessary to brush your teeth twice a day.  Even though you brush your teeth regularly, you still go to your dentist for a teeth cleaning and maybe some whitening. Similarly, seeing a professional esthetician regularly is an important element of healthy, radiant skin.

A professional facial is designed to help you relax and improve your skin. The treatment leaves your skin cleaner, softer, brighter, more youthful, and jump-starts the process of transformation. At Body Therapy Massage & Spa, our facials are customizable with your esthetician. We also use top-of-the-line Eminence products. Your licensed esthetician will do an analysis of your skin, and put together a regimen of products to help you meet your goals. Some of these products and steps – such as peels for exfoliation, or extraction of blackheads/whiteheads – are for professionals only. However, some of the products – such as cleansers and moisturizers – can be used at home to ensure you get the maximum results for your skin.

Where Science Meets Art
In order for an esthetician to be licensed to practice in Michigan, they must complete a minimum 400-hour training program that includes knowledge on skin analysis and care, facials, and hair removal. Once training is complete, they must pass both a written and practical licensing exam. The science will help you reach your skin objectives, but the intuitive art will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Our team blends their experience and training with their heart and passion for their work to create an experience of excellence every time.
